I’d like to warmly welcome Designer Man Cave’s next guest; fellow blogger and life enthusiast, Greg Beazley. When this talented man isn’t being a guru of all things marketing (or is out surfing), he is busy writing posts for his blog, gregbeazley.com. It is a personal platform of all things Greg; online marketing, motivation, psychology, philanthropy and technology. He will be visiting DMC from time to time and reporting in on man stuff beyond my knowledge. My passion for technology and gadgets doesn’t compare to that of the men I know, so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity for Greg to step into the cave and share his techno wisdom…
When Kate asked me to write a guest post about something techy for Designer Man Cave, I felt it was a suitable fit to recommend a handful of my favourite apps, that could either be seen as promoting laziness or making a man’s life that little more efficient. You be the judge.
Let’s face it, men like to make their lives easier wherever possible. What’s more stereotypical than a man on the couch with remote in one hand and a beer in the other? If it weren’t for the humble remote control, changing channels would be a nuisance. But in this day and age, there is a new form of laziness. The remote of all remotes, some would say. The one thing that most people cannot live without. That my friend, is the smartphone.
For those men out there who treasure every second of the day and are determined to become more efficient in their lives, EasilyDo could be the app you’ve been looking for. After connecting your social networks and contacts, EasilyDo will help show you the right information you need to get things done. It’ll tell you the traffic for your daily commute, notifies you when to leave, warns you of bad weather, files receipts, organises contacts (eg. it shows you duplicate contacts and let’s you merge at will – cool!), and even helps you celebrate birthdays – including prescripted messages you can post directly to Facebook. After it does all of that, it will also tell you how many seconds, minutes, hours it has helped you save throughout your day.
EasilyDo is like your life, optimised.
It goes without saying that every man should know how to cook, and I don’t mean Maggi Noodles! I agree, cooking can be daunting. It’s like learning a language. It’s challenging. But, you know what, it doesn’t have to be difficult. That’s where How to Cook Everything comes in and holds your manly hands throughout the whole process. The app is based on the best-selling cookbook “How to Cook Everything” from New York Times columnist Mark Bittman. It has 2,000 recipes, plus 400 how-to illustrations, so right off the bat, it sounds like a good investment. When you select a recipe, you can generate a grocery list in a jiffy. Another cool feature is the recipe timer. Whenever a recipe instructs you to cook something for a certain amount of time, you can bring up a small timer with the requisite time preloaded.
Be a man and learn to cook. The ladies will love you for it.
The next time you have that moviestar or that movie on the tip of your tongue, no longer will you need to rack your brain to remember it. Welcome IMDb – aka Internet Movie Database. IMDb is literally the world’s largest collection of movie, TV and celebrity info. Their aim is to list every detail about every movie and TV show ever made, including who was in it, who made it, the plot, user ratings, trailers, photos, reviews, quotes, goofs, trivia and much more. The IMDb Movies & TV app also lets you find which movies are playing at your local cinema and even purchase tickets. With an IMDb account (free or paid for Pro), the app provides even more features, like the ability to create a watchlist of movies you want to see.
This app is one I think you’ll find useful.
Remember the BlackBerry and BBM (ie. BlackBerry Messenger)? How about Apple iPhone’s iMessage? Well, WhatsApp goes one step further and takes the very simple concept of sending a SMS or MMS and utilises push notifications (via 3G/EDGE or WiFi). It instantly gets messages from friends, colleagues and family across all platforms of smartphone devices. Avoid chewing up your network providers SMS limits and start using WhatsApp Messenger, to save you money. Now who doesn’t like to save money?
Join the rest of your friends and get WhatsApp Messenger.
